Zhenyuan Ancient Town: An Eastern Guizhou Stopover from South to North

Zhenyuan Ancient Town: An Eastern Guizhou Stopover from South to North

Located about 200 km (2.5 hours by car) from Guiyang, Zhenyuan boasts a history of over 2,000 years. Like many other ancient towns in China, it has gradually become commercialized due to tourism development. If you have already visited ancient towns such as Dali or Lijiang elsewhere in China, there is no need to dedicate extra time to this one.

However, within Guizhou, Zhenyuan lies conveniently between two must-see destinations:Mount Fanjing and Kaili. Each is about a 2-hour drive away. Thus it serves as an ideal stopover in between.

Staying overnight here helps break up a long journey (3–4 hours). And you could explore the cliff-hanging Qinglongdong Ancient Building Complex and enjoy the natural scenery along the Wuyang River.

This guide will help you plan your time efficiently, recommend comfortable accommodation, and point out authentic local food.

What to Do in Zhenyuan & How to Plan Your Time

Qinglongdong Ancient Building ComplexQinglongdong Ancient Building Complex

Zhenyuan Ancient Town is built along both banks of the Wuyang River, with three main areas to explore:

  • the Old Streets
  • the Wuyang River Night Views
  • the Qinglongdong Ancient Building Complex

If you arrive in the morning, you can visit all three. If you only have half a day, prioritize the Qinglongdong Ancient Building Complex:

You can first spend 1–2 hours wandering through ancient lanes like Fuxing Alley and Renshou Alley. Then, explore the towering horse-head walls and well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty residences.

After that, head to the stunning Qinglongdong Ancient Building Complex, perched above the river. You can allow about 1 hour to explore its intricate pavilions and halls. Climb to the highest point for a panoramic view of Zhenyuan and the Wuyang River's iconic "S"-shaped curve.

In the evenring, you can take a cruise on the Wuyang River to enjoy the ancient town beautifully illuminated at night.

How to Combine Zhenyuan with Other Guizhou Destinations?

Most travelers begin their journey in Guiyang and follow this efficient route: first head south to Kaili, then continue to Zhenyuan, travel north to Mount Fanjing, and finally return to Guiyang. This circular routing maximizes travel efficiency while avoiding long daily drives.

Where to Stay for the Best Experience?

In Zhenyuan Ancient Town, lodging options are mainly divided into riverside hotels and boutique guesthouses tucked in the old lanes. For convenience in transportation and dining, I recommend staying at a riverside hotel.

Below are two recommended options:

  • Zhenyuan Dahe Guanyi Inn: Located next to the ancient town's pedestrian street and directly opposite Qinglongdong, this inn sits in the heart of the bustling area. You can enjoy beautiful night views of the illuminated river from your room's balcony without even stepping outside.
  • Zhenyuan Qiujiang Wandu: Jiangnanyuan Inn: Situated in the core area of the ancient town along the Wuyang River, some rooms feature private balconies with direct river views.

What to Eat in Zhenyuan: Tofu-Fish Hotpot & Sour Beef Hotpot

Sour Fish SoupSour Fish Soup

In Zhenyuan Ancient Town, don't miss the Tofu-Fish Hotpot - a signature local dish. The Sour Beef Hotpot is another highlight, appetizing and rich in aroma, suitable for both adults and children.

For snacks, try the crispy yet chewy fried fern root cakes and the refreshing sweet rice wine.

Here are some locally-recommended restaurants:

  • Old Town Sour Soup/古城红酸汤 (Riverside Branch): A popular local spot known for its authentic sour fish and beef hotpots. Dine by the river and enjoy great food with a view.
  • Yuan Family Tofu Shop/袁家豆腐: A well-loved traditional eatery tucked away in Fuxing Alley, serving soy-based snacks like tofu pudding and chicken noodle soup.
  • Xunmi Riverside Restaurant/寻觅河畔餐厅: An elegant riverside venue. Besides their classic tofu-fish hotpot, their other local stir-fried dishes are also worth trying.

When to Visit for the Best Comfort & Most Beautiful Views

For the most comfortable climate, the best seasons are spring and autumn (March–May and September–November). You could enjoy cool temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C. It is ideal for walking through ancient lanes and exploring traditional architecture.

For a great photo and experience, I recommend visiting Fuxing Alley and Renshou Alley in the morning. Here, you'll find small eateries and a lively morning market, with shops busy preparing breakfast. It is a great local scene to experience.

In the late afternoon, head to the Qinglongdong Ancient Building Complex. On clear days, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset over the ancient town - a perfect moment for photo.
