Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin: How to Visit

Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin: How to Visit

Elephant Trunk Hill is located in downtown Guilin. It is easily accessible either on foot or by car from the city center.

This iconic elephant-shaped mountain is renowned for its unique karst formation and picturesque Li River scenery. It is one of Guilin's most famous attractions and is free to visit. Most visitors (over 80%) include it in their itinerary.

Since I live just a 10-minute walk from Elephant Trunk Hill, it's a regular spot for my walks. I've created this guide to help you make the most of your visit. Whether you're looking for a quick iconic photo stop or an in-depth exploration!

Three Ways to Explore Elephant Trunk Hill

Different travelers can enjoy Elephant Trunk Hill in different ways. Here are the three main visiting styles:

1. Leisurely Photo Visit

This way is ideal if your time is limited (less than 2 hours). Or you prefer not to hike.

• Scenic Photo Spot: The Moon-in-the-Water viewing platform near Gate 2 offers the best angle to capture the classic shot of the "elephant's trunk" and the Li River.

• Aerial View Alternative: To avoid crowds, head to the rooftop café of Guilin Jolie Vue Boutique Hotel. You can enjoy a coffee while taking in a panoramic view of Elephant Trunk Hill from above.

2. In-Depth Hiking Experience

  • Recommended Route (One-Way Circuit): Enter at Gate 1 → Moon-in-the-Water Cave → Summit Hike → Puxian Pagoda → Descend → First Viewing Platform → Lovers' Island → Exit at Gate 2
  • Key Highlights Along the Trail:

Moon-in-the-Water Cave: Where the elephant's "trunk" meets the Li River, featuring millennia-old cliff carvings.

Puxian Pagoda: Tibetan-style Buddhist pagoda at the summit offering panoramic views of Guilin and the Li River.

Elephant's Eye Cave: Walk through this natural rock tunnel to witness fascinating geological formations.

Hiking Tips:

While the mountain isn't tall (≈200m elevation), the stone steps are steep. And the hiking difficulty is moderate. Many families with children climb on weekends. It will take 20 minutes to climb to the top. If you have knee issues or acrophobia, it may be a challenge.

3. Li River Bamboo Raft

If you don't have time to experience bamboo rafting in Yangshuo, you could try the Li River bamboo raft at Elephant Trunk Hill. The tour offers a 20-minute unique perspective of Elephant Trunk Hill from the water. But the scenery remains similar to what you'd see from shore. Each raft costs approximately $30 USD and can accommodate up to 4 passengers.

Best Time to Visit Elephant Trunk Hill

Elephant Trunk Hill

Through the year, the best time to visit is Autumn (September-November). Its cool and comfortable weather is good for climbing up the hill.

Avoid: Major holidays (Chinese New Year, May Day, National Day) due to extreme crowds.

While open year-round, Elephant Trunk Hill tends to be crowded with noisy tour groups. For quieter experiences, visit during off-peak hours or head to the rooftop of Guilin Jolie Vue Boutique Hotel across the river for panoramic views.

  • Early Morning (7:00-9:00): There are usually fewer crowds with soft lighting. It is ideal for photography. You might also get opportunity to observe locals practicing tai chi and morning exercises.
  • Late Afternoon (17:00-18:30): You can capture the sunset from the top of Elephant Trunk Hill.
  • Peak Hours: Viewing platforms become overcrowded after 10:00 AM, making quality photography difficult.

Name and Legend of Elephant Trunk Hill

Elephant Trunk Hill gets its name from its elephant-shaped rock formation dipping into the Li River. Legend says it was a heavenly elephant who fell in love with Guilin's beauty. When forced to return, it turned to stone while drinking from the river - creating this poetic landmark that blends nature with myth.
