Xi'an Weather in October 2026: Things to Do

October in Xi'an feels cool and comfortable, with temperatures around 11–17°C (52–63°F). Days are mild and suitable for long hours of sightseeing, while mornings and evenings feel cooler, so a light jacket is usually needed.

Rain is fairly common, but often comes in short bursts that are easy to plan around. It rarely lasts all day, so most outdoor activities can proceed without major disruption.

Avoid the First Week of October If You Can

October is one of the most comfortable times to visit Xi'an. The weather is mild and generally predictable, so you could easily plan full days of sightseeing and spend extended time outdoors without feeling too hot or too cold.

However, timing matters more than you might expect.

We strongly recommend avoiding October 1–7, during China's National Day Golden Week. This is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Hotels fill up quickly, ticket availability becomes limited, and prices can rise by 30–60%.

More importantly, the experience at major sites can feel rushed and crowded. At places like the Terracotta Army, queuing times can easily be 30–60 minutes longer than usual. Inside the sites, large crowds make it harder to move freely or take your time.

If your schedule allows, visiting after October 7 makes a noticeable difference. Crowds drop significantly, prices return to normal, and the overall pace becomes much more relaxed. You could enjoy the same attractions, but in a far more comfortable way.

Top Things to Do in Xi'an in October

1. Try a Hands-on Mini-Warrior Assembly

A visit to the Terracotta Army becomes more immersive when you go beyond just viewing the pits.

We discovered a hidden museum near the site. Here, you could wear protective clothing, and assemble a mini-warrior under expert guidance while getting a glimpse into the work that goes on behind the scenes.

Especially during the National Day Golden Week, it's a great way to avoid crowds and still gain a deeper understanding of the Terracotta Army.

Very few people come here throughout the year, making it a truly special experience that sets you apart from other tourists. If you are interested, see our 7-Day Beijing & Xi'an Highlights Tour.

2. Hike Mount Hua in October as an Easy Day Trip from Xi'an

Hiking in October is much more comfortable. Cooler temperatures and generally clearer views mean the climb feels more manageable, even on steeper sections.

There are 5 ways to explore Mount Hua. We recommend taking the cable car up and down from the West Peak, which is less physically demanding. You could enjoy the most scenic peak up close, then walk to the South Peak, the highest point, for panoramic views. In October, the clearer air often makes these views even more rewarding.

3. Catch the First Autumn Colors in Late October

After October 20th, the first touches of autumn color come to Xi'an, highlighted by the yellow ginkgo leaves. Though Xi'an is not known for its foliage, it adds a pleasant seasonal atmosphere to your visit.

During this time, you'll notice these colors while exploring places like the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, or along the City Wall. Golden leaves against ancient architecture create a simple but memorable setting for photos.

If you want to experience this in a more relaxed way, a short city walk works especially well. Walk from the Big Wild Goose Pagoda toward Tang Paradise, where you'll see ginkgo trees around the North Square of the pagoda and denser groves near Ziyun Tower inside the Paradise.

As you walk, the mix of historic landmarks, open spaces, and seasonal color makes the experience feel more relaxed and visually rewarding, especially in the softer autumn light.

What to Wear in Xi'an in October

Layering works best in October, so you could easily adjust from morning to evening, from outdoors to indoors.

What to Pack

  • Tops: Long-sleeve shirts or light sweaters
  • Outerwear: A light jacket for most days. A thin windbreaker or trench coat if you prefer something warmer
  • Bottoms: Long pants or jeans
  • Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes (you'll be on your feet a lot)

Do You Need a Heavy Coat?

  • No need for down jackets or heavy winter coats
  • A light to mid-weight layer is generally enough
  • If you feel cold easily, bring an extra thin layer instead of a bulky coat

Rain & Extras

  • A compact umbrella or light raincoat is useful
  • Showers are usually short, so no need for heavy rain gear
