Tibet Weather in August: What to Do and Travel Tips

Tibet Weather in August: What to Do and Travel Tips

August is one of the best and most popular months to visit Tibet. The air is also more humid and oxygen levels are higher than earlier in the year, so the risk of altitude sickness would be lower.

Although August is part of the rainy season, most showers come at night, so sightseeing and city walking during the day won't be affected by rainfalls.

Climate Overview of Major Destinations

Lhasa 15-21 /59-70 20 82.6
Shigatse 12-23 /54-73 15 84

Nyingchi 19-28 /66-82 22 108.4
Ngari 10-19 /50-66 14 30.4

In Lhasa, known as the "City of Sunshine", August rains mostly come at night. Days remain bright and pleasant, so you don't need to worry about visiting in the daytime. Shigatse enjoys similar weather with plenty of sunshine and clear blue skies.

At Everest Base Camp, August is the wettest month of the year. Heavy rain and thick clouds often block the mountain, making it hard to see the summit. It's not an ideal time to visit if you want clear views of Mount Everest.

In Nyingchi area, the meadows are lush and full of wildflowers like irises and gentians, they create a scene that feels like summer in the Alps. However, frequent rainfall and mist may hide Namcha Barwa Peak, and be careful to the possible landslides in mountain areas.

Ngari has comfortable temperature in August, so it's a great time for trekking around Mount Kailash. Just try to plan your hike on sunny days, as trails can get slippery after rain.

Best Things to Do in August

Soak in the Beauty of Lake Namtso

August is one of the best times to visit Lake Namtso. In August, the weather is milder, so you can really enjoy the stunning blue water without freezing at high altitude (4,718 m) and strong winds.

On sunny days, the lake turns a deep sapphire blue, and the distant snow-capped mountains feel close enough to touch.

Take your time walking along the lakeshore, breathing in the crisp air and watching colorful prayer flags and leisurely yaks. Just be sure to protect yourself from the sun — the UV at this altitude is extremely strong.

Appreciating the Giant Thangka Painting at Shoton Festival

Shoton Festival, also known as the Yogurt Festival, is a famous and popular Tibetan traditional festival, usually held in early August.

The day begins at Drepung Monastery, where you'll have to wait in line to see the dramatic unveiling of a giant thangka painting.

Later, locals gather in Norbulingka Park for outdoor picnics, Tibetan opera performances, and lots of yogurt and butter tea.

Crowds and Costs

August is peak travel season in Tibet. The weather is beautiful, schools are on summer break across China, and big festivals like the Shoton Festival and Nagqu Horse Racing Festival bring even more visitors.

Expect busy streets in major tourist cities, lively monasteries, and lots of tour groups at popular spots such as Potala Palace and Yamdrok Lake. Hotels and drivers get booked out early, and prices may double.

If you want to visit Tibet in August and experience the festive atmosphere, we suggest booking your trip at least 3 months in advance!

What to Wear

Dressing in layers is the key, so that you can adjust as the temperature shifts through the day.

During the day, you'll feel comfortable in light, breathable clothing. A T-shirt with long, thin pants works well. The sun is very strong, so bring a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect your skin.

At night, or when you head to higher places like Namtso or mountain viewpoints, the temperature drops quickly. Pack a warm jacket such as a fleece or light down coat. A scarf, hat, and gloves make a big difference, especially if you get cold easily.

August still brings occasional showers, so a waterproof jacket is essential. If you plan to hike or explore outdoors, waterproof shoes help keep your feet dry and steady on wet ground.
