If Your Schedule Is Flexible...

For mild weather, beautiful scenery, and fewer crowds, opt for a date from March to April, September, or mid-October to mid-November.

To beat the crowds, you should avoid the dates of peak tourist season (July to August) and Chinese public holidays.

  • Chinese New Year: February 16 to February 23, 2026 / February 5 to February 12, 2027
  • Labor Day Holiday: May 1 to May 5, 2026 (same in 2027)
  • National Day Holiday: October 1 to October 7, 2026 (same in 2027)

If you want to see the snow scenery and enjoy more affordable prices, travel between late December and February. Prepare yourself for the winter version of the Avatar Mountains, covered by ice and snow, without lining up in queues.

If Your Travel Dates Are Fixed Between May and August...

This period is both Zhangjiajie's lush, rainy season and its busiest tourist peak.

While rain can bring mist that shrouds the iconic peaks, it also creates a dramatic, ethereal landscape. Keep in mind that mountain weather changes quickly, so a cloudy or foggy morning could give way to a clear and stunning afternoon.

To ensure a great trip despite the crowds and weather, we (Travel China) design itineraries that include captivating indoor alternatives, like sandstone painting, for the rainiest moments.

More importantly, we know how to beat the crowds. We arrange visits for off-peak hours and include unique, peaceful experiences like biking at the foot of Tianmen Mountain, a peaceful spot away from the main tourist trails.

Zhangjiajie in Spring (March to May): Blossoms, Foggy, and Warm

  • Average temperatures: 15–25°C (59–77°F)
  • Rainy days per month: 7-12 days

Spring is one of the best seasons to visit Zhangjiajie, with comfortable weather and fewer crowds.

You could expect colorful spring flowers and verdant trees in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, but it may feel a bit chilly and foggy in March, until April rolls around.

As we move into May, rainfall is gradually increasing, but it will last only an hour or two and will not disrupt your schedule.

Remember to avoid the Labor Day holiday (May 1 to May 5, 2026) for fewer tourists and quieter attractions.

But if your travel dates are fixed, arrange your tour at least 3 months in advance and stick to the off-peak hours(as early as possible), or waste time lining up or jamming on the road.

Recommended Things to Do in Spring

  • Hiking in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park for early spring views.
  • Dare yourself by walking on the world's longest and highest glass bridge.
  • If you're adventurous, try bungee jumping from the glass bridge.

Zhangjiajie in Summer (June to August): Cope with Heat, Crowds, and Rain

Bailong Elevator in Zhangjiajie National Forest ParkBailong Elevator in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
  • Average temperatures: 25–34°C (77–93°F)
  • Rainy days per month: 10-13 days

Zhangjiajie in summer could be hot and muggy, coinciding with the peak travel season.

To avoid the crowds, June could be a good month before the peak summer vacation, but often brings heavy showers.

On rainy days, you can choose to stay indoors and learn sand painting or Tujia brocade weaving, or try your luck to see a spectacular mountain view or nothing.

July sees the highest volume of visitors, meaning you could face long queues in the scorching sunshine. To escape the summer heat, visit Huanglong Cave, Golden Whip Stream, and Baofeng Lake for a refreshing natural experience.

By August, although it is still crowded, the weather typically stabilizes, with more sunny days, making it perfect for working up a sweat on a hike, via ferrata, or bike ride.

Recommended Things to Do in Summer

  • Take the world's longest tourist cableway to the top of Tianmen Mountain.
  • Find the hidden 'Sky Farmland' in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
  • Learn about sandstone painting from a famed artist.

Zhangjiajie in Autumn (September to November): Ideal Weather & Vibrant Foliage

  • Average temperatures: 13–25°C (55–77°F)
  • Rainy days per month: 6-8 days

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Zhangjiajie. The summer crowds are gone, temperatures cool, and rainy days lessen, revealing a landscape of crisp air and stunning views.

In September, the summer heat still lingers. While mornings and evenings may be misty, the fog typically lifts by midday to reveal breathtaking vistas.

From late October to mid-November, you will be welcomed by the vibrant foliage. This is the prime season for hiking, biking, and climbing amid the crisp, fresh air.

To ensure a smooth experience, we advise avoiding the peaking National Day holiday (Golden Week from October 1 to October 7, 2026).

For a trip with fixed dates, secure your travel arrangements at least three months in advance to guarantee availability and better rates.

Recommended Things to Do in Autumn

  • Find the inspiration of the Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
  • Cycling on the serene back mountain of Tianmen Mountain.
  • Try via ferrata at Qixing Mountain, which includes a sky ladder challenge.

Zhangjiajie in Winter (December to February): Cold, Dry, and Snowy

  • Average temperatures: 5–12°C (41–54°F)
  • Rainy/snowy days per month: 3-5 days

Winter is the low season to visit Zhangjiajie.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain don't close in the winter. You could enjoy a quieter time with fewer tourists and monkeys, and more affordable prices.

From early to mid-December, you could encounter several days of rain and fog as winter sets in, with steadily cooling temperatures.

If you are looking for the snow scenery and drier days, aim for late December to early February.

Middays often offer clearer views. Pack thick coats and warm accessories, as the mountain summits are significantly colder than the city area.

Try to avoid the Chinese New Year Holiday (February 16 to February 23, 2026) if possible, when the huge travel rush could easily drain the transport tickets and disrupt your travel plans.

Recommended Things to Do in Winter

  • View the snowy scenery at the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
  • Enjoy the local natural hot springs to warm yourself.
  • Ascend to the summit via the Tianmen Mountain cable car amidst freezing fog.
