Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai: What to See and How to Visit

Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai: What to See and How to Visit

Jade Buddha Temple was built around 1918 in the style of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Named for its 1.9-meter-high white jade Buddha, Jade Buddha Temple is worth about 1–1.5 hours if you want to see the temple's most prized treasure and experience an active Buddhist temple.

If you are on a tight schedule, or your priority is the Bund, Shanghai's old neighborhoods, or the city's modern skyline, you can skip it.

Visit it if you want:

  • to see Shanghai's famous jade Buddhas;
  • to experience an active Buddhist temple;
  • to learn more about Chinese Buddhist culture;
  • or to spend some time with traditional temple architecture.

Skip it if you want:

  • Shanghai's skyline and modern cityscape;
  • old neighborhoods and cafés;
  • or a very short list of the city's highest-priority sights.

1. The Two Jade Buddhas: The Absolute Must-see

The temple is named after two white jade Buddhas brought to Shanghai from Myanmar in the late 19th century.

The most important stop is the Jade Buddha Hall, where you can see the seated jade Buddha, about 1.9 meters high. Then continue to the Reclining Buddha Hall to see the smaller reclining jade Buddha, which represents the Buddha before entering nirvana.

If you only have one hour, prioritize these two halls. You don't need to inspect every hall or Buddhist statue to understand why the temple is significant.

2. Traditional Chinese Temple Architecture

The jade Buddhas are the main attraction, but the temple itself is also worth noticing.

As you walk through the complex, look for the symmetrical layout, yellow walls, traditional rooflines, courtyards, and carved decorative details.

The architecture gives you a very different side of Shanghai from the skyscrapers around the Bund and Lujiazui.

If you enjoy Chinese architecture, allow a little extra time to walk rather than rushing directly from one Buddha hall to the next.

Photography Tips

If you want photos, focus on the architecture, courtyards, roof details, and overall temple atmosphere rather than trying to photograph every hall.

Photography is restricted in certain worship areas or during religious activities. Follow the signs inside the temple.

3. Taste the Vegetarian Cuisine

The temple also has a vegetarian food section serving traditional Buddhist vegetarian dishes with Shanghai-style cooking (priced at 50–70 RMB per person).

This works well for vegans, or if you want to eat immediately after visiting rather than finding another restaurant.

I would treat the vegetarian food as an optional add-on, not the main reason to visit. Come for the jade Buddhas first.

Check detailed information on its official website: Jade Buddha Temple.

How Much Time Do You Need at Jade Buddha Temple?

Koi Pond at the Jade Buddha Temple
Koi Pond at the Jade Buddha Temple
  • Less than 1 hour: See the two jade Buddhas, look around the main halls, and leave.
  • 1–1.5 hours: See the two Buddhas, explore the main architectural spaces, and spend some time observing the temple atmosphere. This is the amount of time we would suggest for most travelers.
  • 1.5–3 hours: Worth considering if you have a strong interest in Buddhism, Chinese temple architecture, religious culture, or an interest in having a vegan meal inside.

If you are visiting Shanghai for only one or two days and Buddhist culture is not a priority, don't force Jade Buddha Temple into your itinerary simply because it is famous.

The time may be better spent on the Bund, the Former French Concession, or another experience that matches your interests more closely.

If you're unsure whether it deserves a place in your short Shanghai itinerary, tell us how many days you have and what else you want to see. We can help you decide where it fits without adding unnecessary cross-city travel.

Jade Buddha Temple vs. Jing'an Temple: Which Fits Your Itinerary?

Shanghai Jing'an Temple light track night view
Shanghai Jing'an Temple night view
  Jade Buddha Temple Jing'an Temple
Main appeal Jade Buddhas and Buddhist culture Temple architecture + modern Shanghai
Experience Slower and more cultural Quicker and more visual
Suggested time 1–1.5 hours About 30–60 minutes for a quick photo
Best for Travelers interested in Buddhism and traditional temple culture Travelers who want a temple stop without spending much time

Choose Jing'an Temple for a quick architectural stop, while opting for Jade Buddha Temple if you want to spend more time understanding Buddhist culture and seeing the famous jade Buddhas.

You don't need to visit both unless temples are a specific interest.

How to Fit Jade Buddha Temple into Your Shanghai Itinerary

Jade Buddha Temple works best as one stop within a Former French Concession route, rather than as a destination that requires a special trip across Shanghai.

For example, you could visit the Former French Concession in the morning, have lunch nearby, and then continue to Jade Buddha Temple for a cultural immersion.

If your Shanghai itinerary is already full, don't add the temple just to collect another famous attraction.

If you want to visit Jade Buddha Temple without wasting time crossing Shanghai, we can build it into your private sightseeing route and combine it with nearby experiences that match your interests.
