Mount Fanjing: How to Enjoy a Hassle-Free and Fulfilling Visit

Mount Fanjing: How to Enjoy a Hassle-Free and Fulfilling Visit

Known as the "Castle in the Sky" in the real world, Mount Fanjing is also a time-honored Buddhist sacred site. Here, you can not only ride a cable car through seas of clouds but also climb to the Red Clouds Golden Summit (towering at an altitude of 2,336 meters).

With swirling mists underfoot and extraordinary rock formations around you, the experience is uniquely awe-inspiring (like stepping into a celestial realm). It is well worth a special trip.

However, reaching the Golden Summit requires using both hands and feet to climb chains along steep sections, making it physically demanding. For this reason, we do not recommend bringing children under 8 years old or elderly visitors with limited mobility.

The scenic area often gets crowded, with complex routes and changeable weather. This guide offers practical tips to help you confidently tackle the challenges and conquer this majestic mountain.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Mount Fanjing?

For a better chance of clear weather, plan your visit between April and June or September and October. These periods see less rainfall, a higher probability of sea of clouds formations, and better visibility.

It's advisable to avoid the rainy season in July and August, when overcast skies, rain, and thick fog are more frequent.

The weather at Mount Fanjing is highly changeable, with mist or clouds present on over 200 days of the year. While these conditions may obscure distant views, they add a mystical, fairy-tale atmosphere to the mountain landscape. The Red Clouds Golden Summit emerging intermittently from the clouds offers a unique experience.

Temperatures at the summit can be over 10°C lower than at the base, so be sure to bring a windproof jacket or a coat for warmth.

  • In summer, carrying a raincoat is recommended due to sudden showers.
  • During the winter (December to March), conditions are harsh. The cold temperatures, frequent trail ice leading to closures, and strong winds with freezing rain make it an unsuitable time for travel.

Below is the approximate temperature range at the summit by month:

  • Dec-Mar: 0-6°C
  • Apr-May: 12-16°C
  • Jun-Sep: 19-23°C
  • Oct-Nov: 8-12°C

How to Get to Mount Fanjing

Mount Fanjing is located in Tongren City, Guizhou, and currently has no direct international flights. The most convenient way is to first fly to Guiyang. Guiyang now offers direct flights from Singapore, Bangkok, and Hong Kong, making your journey more accessible. From Guiyang, there are two ways to get to Mount Fanjing:

  • By train/car: Take a high-speed train to Tongren South Station (about 1.5 hours). Then transfer to a car for approximately 1 hour to reach the East Gate of Mount Fanjing.
  • By private car: To avoid multiple transfers, we recommend joining our customized Guizhou tour. The tour includes private transportation and a dedicated guide, with an overnight stay in Tongren city or at the foot of Mount Fanjing the day before your visit. This arrangement not only saves you from an early morning rush the next day but also allows you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Mount Fanjing at a relaxed pace.

For itinerary planning, most of our clients prefer combining Mount Fanjing with other popular nearby destinations, such as Chongqing, Zhangjiajie. Since there is no direct high-speed rail from Guiyang to Zhangjiajie, we recommend traveling from Guiyang to Chongqing first, then proceeding to Zhangjiajie for a more efficient route.

Here is a sample itinerary:

  • Day 1–2: Guiyang – Visit Huangguoshu Waterfall, Qianling Mountain Park, or Qingyan Ancient Town.
  • Day 3–5: Kaili ( 2 hours' drive from Guiyang) – Explore Miao and Dong ethnic villages.
  • Day 6: Tongren ( 2 hours' drive from Kaili) – Visit Mount Fanjing.
  • Day 7: Chongqing ( 3.5 hours' train from Tongren) – Explore Hongya Cave, Ciqikou, and other attractions.
  • Day 8–10: Zhangjiajie ( 2 hours' train from Chongqing) – Discover Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

Another popular destination to combine with Guizhou is Yunnan. It is known for its snow-capped mountains, plateau lakes, ancient towns and ethnic minority cultures. With its proximity to Guizhou (3 hours' train from Guiyang to Kunming), a Yunnan-Guizhou itinerary is particularly appealing to travelers. Click to learn more about our Yunnan + Guizhou itinerary.

Ticket and Climbing Reservation for Mount Fanjing: On-Site Tickets Unavailable

Mount Fanjing operates a strict real-name reservation system. Tickets must be booked online one week in advance (via the official WeChat account: 梵净山旅游区), as on-site purchases are generally unavailable. During peak travel seasons, tickets are in high demand and often sell out quickly. You'll need to secure your ticket as soon as reservations open.

Additionally, when climbing the Red Cloud Golden Summit, you must reserve a specific entry time at the base. You can scan the QR code at Pudu Square after getting off the cable car to reserve your climbing time slot. If you miss your scheduled time, you will need to rebook and join the queue again.

How to Avoid Crowds at Mount Fanjing

The key to avoiding crowds at Mount Fanjing is to steer clear of peak travel periods. We strongly recommend avoiding the following time:

  • summer vacation (July–August)
  • May Day holiday (May 1–5)
  • National Day (October 1–7).

During these times, the mountain is packed with visitors and wait times can stretch to 2–3 hours. The overall experience is significantly diminished. For a more peaceful and immersive visit, plan your trip on weekdays or during the off-season.

If you visit during the popular autumn season (September–November), make sure to arrive early! The least crowded period is right after the scenic area opens (around 7:30–8:00 AM). Try to reach the entrance by 9:00 AM to be among the first visitors inside. This allows you to avoid large tour groups.

Routes and Duration for Visiting Mount Fanjing

Mount Fanjing has two entrances: the East Gate and the West Gate. Over 90% of visitors enter through the East Gate, where a cable car provides direct access to the summit area in about 20 minutes. This saves you the strenuous 4–5 hour climb, allowing you to conserve energy for exploring the core scenic spots.

These include the two main peaks - Red Clouds Golden Summit (2,336 m) and Old Golden Summit (2,494 m) - as well as Mushroom Rock and Chengen Temple.

There are two main recommended routes:

  • Challenge First, Ease Later: After taking the cable car, begin by climbing the popular Red Clouds Golden Summit (approx. 1 hour; the trail is steep with 80–90° sections). Then visit Chengen Temple, Mushroom Rock, and Old Golden Summit.
  • Ease First, Challenge Later: Start with Chengen Temple, Mushroom Rock, and Old Golden Summit, leaving Red Clouds Golden Summit for last.

Exploring the entire summit area generally takes 5–6 hours. Including cable car and shuttle bus time, we recommend allocating a full day for Mount Fanjing. If you're short on time or energy, you can choose to only climb Red Clouds Golden Summit. From the top, you'll still enjoy distant views of Old Golden Summit.

Where to Stay and Eat in Mount Fanjing

To avoid an early morning rush and enter the scenic area with ease the next day, we recommend staying directly in Jiangkou County at the foot of the mountain. You can choose from comfortable hotels near Mount Fanjing, such as the Mountain Fanjing Qixi Resort. This hotel offers full facilities, is surrounded by ancient trees. And it provides a tranquil environment within walking distance to the entrance.

For dining, we suggest trying locally-loved restaurants at the foot of Mount Fanjing or in Jiangkou County, such as Mountain Fanjing Miao Ethnic Local Cuisine Restaurant. Be sure to taste local specialties:

chicken hotpotHot Pot
  • Jiangkou rice tofu
  • Mount Fanjing dried beef.
  • Wild mushroom and chicken hotpot, full of natural mountain freshness.

Dining options on the mountain are limited and relatively expensive, so we recommend bringing light snacks and drinking water to keep energized during your visit.
