Xi'an Weather in July 2026: How to Avoid the Heat and Crowds

Weather: In July, Xi'an's reputation as a "furnace city" is in full swing. July is Xi'an's hottest and wettest month. Average temperatures range from 22°C to 33°C (72-91°F), with highs reaching around 40°C (104°F) on the hottest days.

Humidity stays between 75-80%, creating muggy conditions, though air-conditioned indoor spaces offer relief.

July also sees the most rainfall of the year, with around 10 rainy days. Expect sudden afternoon showers that briefly cool things down.

What to Wear: Shorts and short sleeves are essential. Don't forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and strong sunscreen (SPF 50+). Keep a compact umbrella or rain jacket for those afternoon showers.

Is July Worth Visiting Xi'an?

From my own experience traveling to Xi'an in July, it's not the ideal time to visit. The heat can be intense, making outdoor exploration uncomfortable. July is also Xi'an's peak travel month due to summer school holidays in China, so expect crowded attractions and higher prices.

If you have flexibility in your dates, consider visiting in early to mid-June or late August. These times offer milder weather and fewer crowds for exploring major sites like the Terracotta Army and the Muslim Quarter.

How to Plan a Trip to Xi'an in July

If July is your only travel window, don't worry. With smart planning to avoid the heat and crowds, you can still travel comfortably.

Generally, a 3-day visit is enough to explore Xi'an.

If you're traveling with family, especially with kids or elderly relatives, consider 5-6 days. This gives everyone time to rest during the hottest hours, perhaps spending an afternoon in an air-conditioned mall, relaxing by the hotel pool, or enjoying a spa treatment.

Itinerary Advice for Avoiding Heat and Crowds

For morning:

We recommend finishing visits to popular sites, such as the Terracotta Warriors, and outdoor sites like the Big Wild Goose Pagoda before 11 AM. You'll beat both the crowds and the midday heat.

For afternoon:

After lunch, between 12 PM and 4 PM, avoid outdoor sightseeing to escape the worst of the heat.

Instead, choose cool indoor activities such as visiting the Xi'an Museum, watching "The Great Qin" show with its immersive 360-degree experience, or joining a biangbiang noodle-making class. These options keep the pace relaxed while staying comfortable indoors.

Local tip:

We recommend the Xi'an Museum over the Shaanxi History Museum in July. Tickets for the Shaanxi History Museum are nearly impossible to get. Even if you manage to book one, long queues in the heat and heavy crowds inside can easily dampen the experience.

If you visited the Terracotta Warriors in the morning, the afternoon is a good time for a quieter, hands-on experience. A lesser-known lab, where you can assemble mini-warriors and handle real Qin Dynasty artifacts, allows you to deepen your understanding without dealing with large crowds.

For evening:

You can start your evening itinerary around 4 PM, when temperatures begin to ease. Xi'an's nightlife is lively and well-suited to summer evenings.

Plan your visit to the City Wall around sunset. It's cooler, and you can enjoy both the sunset views and the illuminated night scenery after dark.

Afterward, head to the Muslim Quarter for a night food tour. It's more comfortable in the evening and much livelier than during the day.

The Grand Tang Dynasty Ever Bright City is another good evening stop, where you can experience the atmosphere of Tang Dynasty culture and take social media photos.

Are There Places in or Around Xi'an for Cooling Off?

If you want to escape the heat, Yunqiu Mountain's Ten-Thousand-Year-Old Natural Ice Cave is highly recommended. I visited in March, and the temperature inside stays around -10°C (14°F) year-round. Few people know about it, which makes it ideal for avoiding both the summer heat and crowds.

Is Mount Hua recommended in July? In general, Mount Hua is hot and crowded in July, so we don't recommend it. Instead, you might consider Jingbian Wave Valley, Ganquan Grand Canyon, or Hukou Waterfall. While still hot, these places see far fewer crowds than downtown Xi'an.

Our private tours include dedicated transportation, so the moment you finish sightseeing, you step right back into an air-conditioned vehicle. No waiting in the heat for taxis or shuttles, just instant comfort that keeps your experience enjoyable. Contact us to start planning.

FAQs

1. If July Is My Only Option, When Should I Visit?

Early July is better than late July. Most of the month's heavy rain falls in the second half, and early July tends to be slightly less hot than late July.

2. Should I Choose July or August?

August offers a slightly better experience than July. While the temperature difference is minimal, August sees less rainfall than July. Plus, crowds thin out significantly after August 20 when school holidays end.

3. What Should I Know About Visiting the Terracotta Army in July?

Staggered entry: Arrive before 8 AM or after 4:30 PM ( (note that ticketing stops at 5 PM)) to avoid long queues and heavy crowds. Weekdays, especially Tuesday to Thursday, see fewer visitors.

Try reverse routing: Most people follow Pit 1 → Pit 2 → Pit 3. If you find it crowded, go the opposite way: Pit 3 → Pit 2 → Pit 1. This helps you avoid tour group rushes and makes for better photos.

Bring cooling gear: While all three pits have air conditioning, it can still feel quite hot when packed with many people. A handheld fan or cooling patches will keep you comfortable during your visit.
