It has inspired Chinese poets and painters for over a thousand years, and in 2011 was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Ten Classic Scenes of West Lake

West Lake has ten named scenic spots. It's a tradition that dates back to the Song Dynasty and was formally inscribed by Emperor Kangxi in 1699. Each scene is captured in a four-character poetic name, referring to a specific mood, season, or time of day. Our guides can reveal the literary anecdotes behind West Lake and make your visit more meaningful.

Scene Chinese Best Time
Spring Dawn on Su Causeway/ Sudi Chunxiao 苏堤春晓 Spring (Mar–Apr)

Of the ten, three stand out as must-sees on any visit, regardless of season. You can see these three scenes in a half-day visit in the afternoon.

Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月) is the most iconic spot on the lake — and the image on the back of China's one-yuan note. You can reach it by boat, and the ticket includes island entry. Once there, you can walk the winding paths between pavilions and gardens, and photograph the three small stone pagodas rising from the water. It's a short but memorable stop.

Fish Viewing at Flower Harbour (花港观鱼) is a relaxed, free-entry park on a peninsula at the southern end of Su Causeway. Hundreds of brightly coloured koi gather near the banks, and the grounds include a peony garden and open lawns.

Lotus Flowers in the Breeze at Quyuan Garden (曲院风荷) is most spectacular in June and July when the lotus beds are in full bloom; even if you're not visiting in the summer, the beautiful garden is worth a visit. It sits at the northern end of Su Causeway and is a natural stop if you're riding the sightseeing cart.

How to Visit West Lake: The most relaxing route

The West Lake Scenic Area is very large. A full loop is about 11 km and takes at least 3.5 hours on foot. To see everything in depth, you would need two days.

For most travelers, a half-day route works better. The following is our recommended half-day route, which covers the most scenic sections without feeling rushed in about 3-4 hours.

Route: Jixian Pavilion → Park Dock → Boat to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon → Boat to Flower Harbour → Su Causeway (by sightseeing cart) → Quyuan Garden → Xiling Bridge → Gu Shan Road → Bai Causeway → Broken Bridge

Follow this route, and you will be on the boat or using the sightseeing cart for most of the visiting time. It saves energy and keeps the pace comfortable, while still covering the highlights. If you're interested in a West Lake tour, you can see our 7-Day Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou Cultural Tour.

The walking sections are short and easy. From Jixian Pavilion to the dock, and from Quyuan Garden to Broken Bridge, you walk about 3 km in total. The paths are flat and manageable, even for seniors.

The boat ride is the highlight of the tour. It takes you across the lake to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon and Flower Harbour, the most iconic views of West Lake.

We suggest taking a hand-rowed wooden boat (USD 22-26/ SGD 28-33 per hour), which is more expensive but offers a better experience. It is quieter and more private, and can take you into calmer inner-lake areas like Wugui Tan, away from the main crowds.

After the boat ride, continue from Su Causeway to Quyuan Garden by sightseeing cart. Explore on foot from there, and finish the route at Broken Bridge.

If you want to enjoy night events (such as the Impressions of West Lake / Most Memorable is Hangzhou show) in West Lake, we suggest scheduling your tour in the afternoon.

After the tour, you can catch the sunset at Jixian Pavilion or Leifeng Pagoda, then stay for the evening fountain show around 19:30, or continue to the Impressions of West Lake / Most Memorable is Hangzhou, which starts at about 19:40.

Practical tips:

  • On Su Causeway, you can choose between the sightseeing cart (about 10 minutes) or walking the full 2.7 km (around 1 hour) if you prefer a slower pace.
  • Boat access is not suitable for wheelchair users, so in that case it is better to stay along the flat lakeside paths.
  • For photos, the most popular spots are Jixian Pavilion, Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Flower Harbour, and Quyuan Garden.

Best Time to Visit West Lake

Spring (March–April) and Autumn (September–November) are the best seasons to visit West Lake due to the great scenery and mild weather.

Spring (March–April) is the most popular season — cherry blossoms and willows along the causeways are at their best, and if you're planning to visit Meijiawu, this is the time to do it. Expect more crowds, especially on weekends.

Summer (June–July) brings the lotus blooms at Quyuan Garden, which are genuinely impressive. It's hot and humid, but the early mornings are pleasant and the lake is beautiful at this time of year.

Autumn (September–November) is arguably the most comfortable season to visit — cooler temperatures, clear skies, and osmanthus flowers perfuming the air around the lake. The Mid-Autumn Festival is in this season, when Three Pools Mirroring the Moon and Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake are at their most scenic period.

Winter (December–February) is the quietest time, with far fewer visitors. Snow is rare but transforms the lake entirely — Broken Bridge (断桥残雪, "Remnant Snow on Broken Bridge") is one of the ten classic scenes for good reason.

Whenever you visit, avoid the Chinese public holidays — such as Labour Day (early May) and Golden Week (early October) — when West Lake is extremely crowded.

Within any given day, the best windows are before 9 am and in the late afternoon. The crowds are thinner, the light on the water is at its most beautiful, and you can actually take in the scenery at your own pace.

How to Get to West Lake

From Shanghai

The high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao Station to Hangzhou takes as little as 45 minutes, with around 200 departures daily. There's no need to book far in advance. Once you arrive at Hangzhou East Station (杭州东站), it's about a 30–40 minute metro ride or 20–30 minute car ride to West Lake.

From Within Hangzhou

West Lake is right in the heart of the city. The most convenient entry point is Longxiang Bridge Station (龙翔桥站), Exit C on Metro Line 1 — from there, it's a 5-minute walk to the lakeside. If you travel with us, we can pick you up from your hotel lobby and take you straight to the West Lake.

Where to Stay around West Lake

We suggest staying in the area around the lakeshore, which is the most convenient base with the lakeside promenade, metro station, and boat docks all nearby. The West Lake will be within walking distance.
